Q1. Where can I buy riceworks®?

Q2. Are riceworks® totally gluten free?
A. We can assure you riceworks is 100% gluten free. We send our samples to an outside lab, which have returned "none detected at a 3ppm level". We rely on good manufacturing practices in our plant and with our suppliers. Although the plants are not gluten free, the lines that are used to manufacture riceworks® are. There are only a small number of ingredients that include gluten in our plants. These are well marked, stored separately and used on different lines, and even in different rooms in the plants. After running any allergen containing materials, a full cleaning of the line is completed before moving back to non-allergen products.
Q3. Why do some bags say oat fiber on the ingredient list?
A. The oat fiber ingredient is a carbohydrate product with all protein and therefore gluten removed. The supplier of this ingredient provided a letter to Shearer's from an independent food safety specialist who assessed the product. The specialist indicated there is no risk of the provocation of celiac disease from ingesting this product.
Q4. What is the source of the Natural Caramel coloring in riceworks®?
A. Caramel color is made by cooking sugars (non-dairy, gluten free) at high temperature to make various shades of brown. The caramel color used in riceworks® is class 1 Plain Caramel.
Q5. What brand of soy sauce do you use in riceworks®, since most soy sauce is not gluten free?
A. For those of you who may have concerns we use an industrial non-branded soy that has been certified gluten free.
Q6. Is there Dairy, Casein, Eggs or Peanuts in riceworks®?
A. We do not handle any nuts (peanuts or tree nuts) or eggs in our manufacturing facility. There are no casein or dairy ingredients in any of our current flavors except for Baked Cinnamon and Parmesan & Sundried Tomato. Some dairy ingredients are used in the plant, and some on the same production line. However, there is a full wet wash of equipment after any dairy ingredients are used to avoid cross-contamination.
Q7. Are your riceworks® Vegan? I’m concerned about the lactic acid and natural flavours.
A. Aside from Baked Cinnamon and Parmesan & Sundried Tomato flavors which are not Vegan, we can assure you riceworks® is a Vegan friendly product. Our suppliers have confirmed this. Note the lactic acid is from non-dairy fermentations.
Q8. How are riceworks® made? Are they baked or fried?
A. riceworks® are made with a selection of the finest ingredients including whole grain brown rice and sesame seeds that are mixed into a dough. The dough is then rolled into a thin sheet, cut into individual chips and baked in a state-of-the-art oven. After baking, the chips are fried in low saturated, zero grams of trans fat sunflower or safflower oil to produce a crisp yet tender texture.
Q9. Does riceworks® contain trans fat?
A. Trans fat, considered a “bad fat”, is something you will not find in any of our riceworks® crisps.
Q10. What is the source of malt dextrin in riceworks®?
A. The malt dextrin is part of the seasoning; the raw material is from corn.
Q11. Do your crisps contain MSG?
A. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) is not added directly to any of our riceworks® flavors. However, some of our flavors use ingredients such as soy sauce and yeast extracts which are natural sources of free glutamate. This means riceworks® may contain traces of naturally occurring MSG. Note that Sea Salt riceworks®, which does not contain soy sauce and/or yeast extracts, is completely free of MSG.
Q12. How many crisps are in a 1oz serving?
A. Our bags are filled by weight rather than by number of crisps. Each crisp is unique, and is slightly different in shape and size. We estimate one 40g serving to contain roughly 10 crisps.
Q13. Why are riceworks® more expensive than potato chips?
A. riceworks® are made with care using high quality, natural ingredients to ensure you are eating an altogether healthier snack than potato chips. Remember, each serving of riceworks® has no cholesterol, 1/3 less fat than potato chips and offers 7 grams of whole grains.
Q14. Why can’t I find riceworks® at Costco when it was there last time I shopped?
A. Please ask your local Costco store manager should you not be able to find riceworks® during your shopping trip at their warehouse. It is likely the product is in the midst of being replenished. Some Costco locations carry riceworks® on a rotational basis. This approach determines when product will be replenished, and it can be replenished slower in some locations than others.
Q15. How many Weight Watchers points are there in a serving of riceworks®?
A. There are 3 Weight Watchers points per serving, which is 40g of riceworks®.
Q16. Are riceworks® kosher?
A. Yes, you can be confident that riceworks® are kosher certified
